Slam, WWU Alumni set for exhibition rematch
Second annual Back 2 Bellingham Battle takes place May 15
For the second year in a row, the Bellingham Slam will face the Western Washington University men’s basketball alumni team in an exhibition contest during the university’s annual Back 2 Bellingham alumni weekend.
The event, dubbed the Back 2 Bellingham Battle, is set for 5 p.m. Sunday, May 15 at WWU’s Wade King Center. The game will pit the Slam against a squad comprised of former Viking standouts from the past decade. With several players on the Slam being Western graduates themselves, this is sure to be a fun and unique event.
The exhibition was first held last year with the Slam prevailing in exciting fashion over the WWU alumni, 108-100. Guard Jacob Stevenson and forward Lukas Henne combined for 66 points for the Slam, while guard Preston Vermeulen led the Viking alumni side with 22 points on 5-of-6 shooting from three-point range.
The Slam will be led by player-coach Tyler Amaya and its lineup will feature a number of other players from the team’s 2014 International Basketball League championship season. The exhibition will serve as a tune-up for the Slam, which will be competing in the Seattle Pro-Am league this summer.
The WWU alumni side is expected to feature a mixture of senior players who completed their eligibility this past spring, along with former standouts who suited up for the Vikings over the years. Former WWU assistant coaches Bob Hofstetter and Rob Visser will guide the team from the sidelines.
A full roster for both sides will be announced about a week before the event.
Seating is limited for the game and is expected to sell out. Courtside tickets are available for $10 while general admission seats cost $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and students. Children ages 12 and under are free. Advance tickets may be purchased online by clicking here.
